Notes
One of the issues that gave the basic characteristic to the 18th century Western thought, which we describe today as "Enlightenment", is the leap from natural philosophy to "science". With the attempt to determine the mathematical laws of the natural philosophy identified with Newton in the 17th century, the perspective towards God, the universe and humans also changed. In this process, it is seen that efforts to harmonize Christianity with reason and nature are increasing. The desire for religion in harmony with nature and reason has given rise to various approaches within Christianity, which are evaluated under the title of religious rationalists. During this period, we also encounter the "natural religion" discourse, which is mainly expressed by deists. John Toland, a name whose intellectual identity and ideas were followed with his numerous works during his time, is also one of those who defend the natural religion approach. In this study, based on his views on God, religion and revelation, Toland's evaluations of the traditional structure of Christianity in terms of his natural religion perspective will be discussed.
