Notes
The main purpose of decoration, which is a component of art production, is to create an impact on the viewer of that work of art. Stone, which has been used as the main material in architectural structures for centuries, was preferred as a result of personal taste as well as geographical factors and durability. We can say that decoration in architecture varies according to the material, and techniques emerge with the intervention applied to the surface of the material used. In stone decoration in architecture, relief, carving, lattice carving, inlay, scraping, painting techniques and the use of colored stone can be mentioned. The inlay technique, which is the subject of our study, is a technique created by inlaying different colored materials onto the main building material. In this study, after briefly giving the historical and architectural features of the Latifiye Mosque, Hamza-i Kebir Mosque, Zinciriye Madrasa and Kasımiye Madrasa, which are among the historical buildings of Mardin from the Islamic Period, with stone inlay technique decoration, the parts of the buildings where these decorations were used are explained with details of patterns and motifs.
