Notes
Slaves constitute an important factor for the material well-being of the gentry in the Toba period, and in this respect (if the Chou period is ignored) the Toba period differs from previous periods. There were also slaves during the Han period, but these were house slaves, that is, slaves used as servants in big houses. As it turned out, they did not play a role in production, nor did the state slaves employed as servants in official buildings and palaces. Since slaves were employed in production during the Toba period, they became a more important economic factor compared to other periods.
