Notes A breakthrough has been made in higher education in Turkey in the last 20 years and at least one university has been established in every province. With the increase in the number of universities, students' university preferences have become more important and a competition has emerged among universities in this regard. Especially since the 1990s, the "studentization" of Anatolian cities and the transformation of cities into university cities have begun to occur. Many studies on this subject point to this phenomenon. In this process, the city has emerged as an important preference factor in students' university preferences. Generally speaking, universities and cities are an important interaction network. Apart from their main purpose of research, education and training, they also have the function of contributing to the city's cultural capital, intellectual development, economic development, technological development and many other areas. On the other hand, universities are also affected by the structure that creates the dynamics of the city. In this context, it is a clear and well-known fact that has been revealed by many studies that the city where the university is located and the perception of that city have a very important function when choosing the university where students will study. Therefore, the student's perception of the city also affects his/her university choice and perception. The purpose of this study on the city perceptions of students studying at Afyon Kocatepe University is to reveal the current situation by measuring the city perceptions of the students, to determine the importance of the elements that are effective in their perceptions of Afyonkarahisar province, and to offer advice and suggestions to take the necessary steps regarding situations that may have a positive impact on their perceptions. The study was carried out using the survey technique, one of the quantitative research methods. Since the research aims to make a general evaluation about students' perception of the city, quantitative research method, which makes it possible to make such an evaluation, was used as a method. Because quantitative research is considered the most appropriate method to reach generalizations and test hypotheses. The prepared questions were delivered to the students over the internet. Within the scope of the research, a survey form was prepared by examining the scales for city perception used in studies conducted on the subject in different cities of our country and the world, and taking into account the sociocultural, physical and geographical features specific to Afyonkarahisar province. This prepared survey form also includes a scale in the form of a 5-point Likert scale (1 "I completely disagree", ... 5 "I completely agree"), in which students' perceptions of the city of Afyonkarahisar are measured, in addition to their demographic characteristics. The population of the study is all the students who have studied at Afyon Kocatepe University in previous years, are currently studying and will study in the coming years; The sample is all students who participated in the survey on a voluntary basis among the students studying in the Spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. In the analysis of the data, in addition to descriptive statistics, CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interation Detection) analysis, which provides a visual result in the form of a tree graph, was used to determine the factors affecting students' city perceptions. In total, data was collected from 16209 students through an electronic survey and the data was analyzed through the SPSS program. In the study, firstly theoretical information on the subject was given, then the findings were presented and the data obtained were interpreted in the conclusion section. As a result of the research, Afyonkarahisar city produces more cream, sausage, Turkish delight, etc. It has been determined that it is perceived and recognized within the framework of gastronomic features such as the city, and that it has a negative image in terms of economy, infrastructure and security. This study reached results that are similar to the studies of Özdemir and Karaca, who carried out a study measuring the student's perception of the city in previous years. When evaluated together with other studies in the literature, this situation stands out as a result that is generally seen in medium-sized cities such as Afyonkarahisar.
