Notes In the Islamic civilization and the Ottomans, which were a part of it, the elderly are among the social segments that are viewed with compassion. Care, protection and meeting the needs of the elderly were on the agenda of the Ottoman Empire, as in every society. In this context, the approach established by religion and culture and envisaging respect for parents has enabled the elderly to gain a respectable place in social life and created social and administrative solutions to protect them. Ottoman society implemented various practices to meet the care and needs of the elderly within the framework of its own traditions and customs. Research in the literature dealing with old age and the elderly in their historical dimension and revealing previous experiences is not sufficient. There is a need for studies that deal with the issue in the light of examples based on primary sources. In this article, the situation of the elderly in the Ottoman capital before the Darülaceze, which was established for the orphans in the difficult conditions of the 1890s, was discussed. Determinations and evaluations regarding the situation of the elderly in the Ottoman Empire and the practices and institutions produced to solve their problems have been put forward within the framework of the 16th-18th century Ottoman Archive documents and the cases in the court records based in Istanbul, especially in Üsküdar.
