Notes Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. After the Nakba, she and her family moved to Jenin. She married at 16 and studied nursing at the Augusta Victoria hospital in Jerusalem. As a result of the 1967 war, she fled to Jordan. She volunteered her time in the Palestinian refugee camps as well as working for UNRWA. In 1998, she received a prize from the UN for her work in fighting poverty and used the money to establish the Families Development Association (an NGO), which provides services and vocational training for low income women, such as the Izdihar project. Muyassar has also been a member of the Jordanian Women’s Union and was elected to the Amman municipal council. In this capacity she helped build a centre for information technology and library services at Wadi Al-Haddadeh, a deprived area of Amman. ( en )
