Notes
This coffee table or guéridon is decorated with gold gilding, metalwork and porcelain plates on wood. In French, guéridon is the name given to decorative coffee tables that mostly consist of a round top and one, three or four legs. This coffee table model, inspired by ancient examples, was designed by King XVI. It gained popularity during the reign of Louis XIV. On the table is a large circular porcelain plate surrounded by eighteen smaller oval porcelain plates. Gilded bronze intertwined floral and geometric motifs decorate the edge of the table all around. The single leg of the coffee table expands from top to bottom and ends with a triangular base. This wooden leg is supported by three gilded bronze spiral brackets decorated with acanthus leaves.
Each of the porcelain plates adorning the plate features a depiction of a different French chateau. The large circular plate in the center shows a landscape surrounded by a gilded strip on a turquoise background. It has been determined that the castle in this scene, signed "Guillon", is Château de Pierrefonds, purchased by Napoleon I in 1810. Eighteen small porcelain plates embedded in the gilded bronze border of the coffee table, decorated with reliefs with floral motifs, are designed similar to the plate in the center. Each one depicts a castle or palace on a turquoise background, surrounded by a gilded strip, with their names underneath. Some of these names are unreadable because they fade over time. The castles, which are distinguished by the names written under them or their iconographic features, are listed clockwise, starting from the top: Le Rambouillet; Petit Trianon (?); Fontainebleau; Azay-le-Rideau; Compiègne; [?]; Chantilly; Bazouges; Alençon; Bonnetable; Malmaison; Chaumont; Montreuil-Bellay; Guérande; La Reine Blanche; Loches; It has been identified as Les Rochers and Chenonceaux.
The “Guillon” signature on the central plate can also be seen in the paintings of three Sèvres porcelain plates, which are now kept in the collection of the Louvre Museum. The iconography of these three plates, attributed to the painter Marthe Guillon, depicting the castles of Pierrefonds, Fontainebleau and Chantilly, resembles the porcelain plates of the coffee table in many respects. There is not enough information about the painter, other than that he was active between approximately 1860-1880.
In 1806, Napoleon I ordered four coffee tables from the Sèvres Porcelain Factory to celebrate the splendor of his empire. These coffee tables, decorated with a main painting in the center and smaller porcelains around it, played a major role in the appreciation of furniture decorated with this type of built-in porcelain in France throughout the 19th century. One of the coffee tables made upon Napoleon's order is Austerlitz, also known as the Table des Maréchaux (Marshals' Table), which is now in the Malmaison Museum. Completed in 1810, Napoleon is depicted in the center and his marshals are depicted around him. Another coffee table ordered at the same time was the Table des Grands Capitaines de l'Antiquité (The Table of the Great Commanders of Antiquity), completed in 1812. The coffee table, on display today at Buckingham Palace, shows Alexander the Great at the center of twelve historical commanders and philosophers.
