Sample Text f.1v.1: In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful f.1v.4: Praise be to God who has counted everything in number and made the utmost its end, a destination and a term. f.1v.11: And after that, arithmetic is a broad, beneficial science, and it is a leader in clarifying the amounts of rights, since it is the upright straight line attested to by the merit of the Great Qur’an, and the noble Ibn al-Karim was proud of him when he said, “Put me in charge of the treasures of the earth, for I am a guardian and a knowledgeable one.” In it, I compiled a brief treatise that I called “Al-Lubab fi arithmetic,” and I limited it to an introduction and a conclusion with three chapters in the middle. Introduction Arithmetic from discrete quantities is a science by which to deduce numerical unknowns — f.10v.1: He said: Seven is a breadth, and the shares are thirty, so turn the phrase around and say the share is seven, and the money is three-thirds and thirteen. The share is seven, three are dropped, of which two-thirds are dropped by the second will. One remains, so increase it over the two-thirds, amounting to twenty-one for each son, seven, as much as the legatee took the share. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
