f.1v.1: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
f.1v.2: We praise You, O One whose blessings are not encompassed in number and the multiplication of whose portion is infinite in length, and we send blessings upon Your Prophet, the upright one, the supporter, and upon his family and companions who guide us to guidance and righteousness.
f.1v.4: As for what follows, this is a treatise on arithmetic arranged in an introduction and ten chapters. The introduction to arithmetic is a science from which one can inquire about extracting numerical unknowns from specific information, and its subject is the number occurring in matter - f.21v.16: Its sum is the square of the fourth, rooted if its squares are added to it and two dirhams or subtracted from it, its roots and two dirhams, whether the sum or the remainder is a root - f.21v.16 This and I know. O dear brother, the student of Nafayes Al-Muttalib, I have mentioned to you in this brief message, rather, the dear jewel from Nafayes Arayes, the laws of calculation, which have not yet been collected in a treatise or a book, so know her value, and do not make her dowry cheap, and withhold her from someone who is not her family, and do not give her away except to someone who is keen to provide for her, and do not waste her on a thick-headed student, lest you be hanging the jewel on the necks of dogs, for many of the Its demands should be maintained and kept secret, by concealing it from most of the people of this time. So keep my will to you, and God will protect you. Done, done, done.
