f.1v.1: In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
f.1v.2: Praise be to God, praise be to those who are thankful, and I bear witness that there is no god but God alone, with no partners, the testimony of the sincere, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the Master of Messengers, may God’s prayers and peace be upon them all, and may God Almighty be pleased with the Companions and the Successors and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.
f.1v.6: And then, Faqir, may God have mercy on him, Muhammad, the descendant of al-Mardini, says, the Shafi’i timekeeper, there is nothing better in calculating astronomical works than the method of calculating the sexagesimal ratio, which is what is used in our time. They abandoned the method of the ancients due to its difficulty and the large number of its works, and I did not find a satisfactory introduction to this art other than the introduction of our sheikh, the Imam, the scholar, Shihab al-Din Ahmad Ibn al-Majdi, called “revealing the truths” in calculating stairs and minutes, and I do not know of a book on this art. Before that, I wanted to summarize a useful introduction in which I mention what I need in the ratio and the simplest places that he exaggerated in summarizing with easy expressions and many clear examples, and I called them the facts of the parchments in calculating stairs and steps - f.24v.6: I mean the house that is more than the imposed quota and the house that is less than it. Then add the outside of the correct degrees that are of length if you took the minus, and decrease if you took the extra, and you get what is required. - f.24v.9 And now, thanks to God Almighty and His help, what we wanted to put in this introduction has been completed for us, its foundations have been established, its problems have been clarified, its chapters have been refined, its methods have been refined, and its ideals have been liberated. Praise be to God for all the blessings, and prayers and peace be upon our master Muhammad, the master of the Arabs and the non-Arabs, and upon his family and companions, the possessors of grace and generosity.
