Since its first edition in 1895, Rudolf-Ernst Brünnow's Arabic Chrestomathy from Prose Writers has been a popular tool for introducing classical Arabic. Twenty years after the seventh edition was published, the opportunity for a new edition arose. The text excerpts are accompanied by a variety of comments on grammatical, lexical and cultural details. The comments are primarily intended as an educational aid for students from the third semester onwards. Nevertheless, reference is made to important modern concepts in Arabic and Semitic studies, whereby aspects of native Arabic grammar theory are also taken into account. Fischer's Grammar of Classical Arabic is regularly referred to, as is Wright's Grammar of the Arabic Language. Important special treatises are also cited, always with a view to ensuring that students develop their own initiative in their studies. Following a suggestion from August Fischer in 1928, the text corpus was expanded to include lexicographical and geographical specimens. The glossary has been revised in terms of content and style. There are also systematic references to editions and commented translations (if available) of the individual text sections.
