Sample Text	Ibrāhīm al-Miʿmār was one of the most important Arab poets of the first half of the 14th century. He came from the class of craftsmen and traders and is an example of how, due to the flourishing of urban education at that time, ever broader sections of society became involved in literary life. Nevertheless, the literature of the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods has long been neglected in Arabic studies. This was based on a view of history that assumed a “Golden Age” until the 11th century and a dramatically long period of decline as a result of climatic and economic crises. The recovery phase that began in the 12th century and the fruitful literary activity that was associated with it were ignored. This can be illustrated by the work of Ibrāhīm al-Miʿmār. He was a star poet whose works were praised by elite writers and distributed in magnificent manuscripts, but which modern Arabic studies had hardly taken notice of. This volume brings together al-Miʿmār's traditional poetic work in the edition section. The commentary section included by the editors contains additional material and makes it easier to access this highly important legacy of a literary era that is still largely unexplored.
