Sample Text Review: Fourier, now Marix-Verlag, has already published titles on Chinese characters (E. Fazzioli: BA 12/03), the Hebrew alphabet (G. Mandel: ID 43/04) and the Mayan script (M. Longhéna: BA 11/04) as takeovers from the Italian publisher Arnoldo Mondadori. This unnamed series also includes this book on the Arabic alphabet, which deals with the development of letters in an introduction, then introduces the writing tube as an essential calligraphy device and explains the individual letters in the main part: naming, transliteration, pronunciation, shapes in 33 scripts, symbolic value. There are also some calligraphic examples on the double pages reserved for each character. The 70-page image section shows styles, variants and calligraphic adaptations. A glossary and bibliography (no German-language publications) conclude the volume. There is no explanation of the pronunciation of the romanization used, so the reader who is concerned about exact articulation has to pick it up from the individual pages of letters. Conditionally from medium-sized city libraries. (2) (Olaf Kaptein), Olaf Kaptein
