Sample Text
Unlike the dialectal Arabic verse poetry (zaǧal) from al-Andalus, the extremely diverse zaǧal tradition of the Arab East, which has been handed down in numerous manuscripts, has remained almost completely unexplored to this day. With this volume, Hakan Özkan presents a work that closes this gap in Arabic literary history. The author shows how important this literary form was from its beginnings in the 12th century to the end of the Mamluk period, that it formed a bridge between the illiterate and the literate and finally between the beginnings of the zaǧal in al-Andalus and the zaǧal of the present. In addition to the analysis of exemplary poems, the work offers literary-historical and other work-transcending approaches, including: through investigations into the poetics and language of zaǧal, its musical and theatrical performativity, its "seat in life" and its political, social and economic backgrounds.
