Notes
Admirer of Arab civilization, Gustave le Bon devoted a work to it consisting of six volumes. In this work, he presented the contributions of the Arabs to the universal heritage, but also the ethical values which characterized these peoples, including tolerance and respect for others. According to him, the sources of these values are multiple. The first consists of the noble race from which the Arabs were derived. Then the appearance of Islam served to consolidate them. Following the Koranic teachings as well as the conduct and sayings of the Prophet, the Muslim Arabs presented an inimitable example in their conquests. Tolerant, they preserved their religions, customs and laws for the conquered populations. They developed industry, commerce and culture in the conquered countries. Out of appreciation of other civilizations, the Moors in Spain borrowed Greco-Latin knowledge, but progressed it. Openness to the Other was a factor in the advent of Arab-Muslim civilization. According to Gustavus the Good, when the Turks replaced the Arabs, they were not capable of implementing the principle of tolerance. On the contrary, cruelty and contempt characterized their behavior towards the Other. Criticizing Bon on this point, we have shown that the Ottomans did follow the example of the Arabs in their attitudes towards other beliefs. Throughout the History of Islam, tolerance was the rule, intolerance was of a political nature.
