Notes After the Battle of Mohács (1526), ​​when the Ottomans took over a large part of Hungary, they became neighbors with Austria and relations began in earnest. The period in which relations with this country diverged, which intensified in the 1600s, coincides with the last periods of the Ottoman Empire, including the Tanzimat and its aftermath. The improvement of mutual relations in the economic, political and social spheres has also been reflected in the intellectual and cultural spheres. One of the reflection areas of cultural and intellectual relations between the two countries is mutual gift exchanges. We can encounter a wide variety of data regarding gift giving, which had a significant place in the Ottoman political arena, as in other countries. When we examine the Ottoman archive documents regarding our subject, we learn that the Austrian delegation gifted books to the sultan from time to time and that the sultan responded to Austria with various gifts. In this study, the Austrian leg of our cultural and intellectual history, which has an important place in shaping the history of nations; It will be tried to be evaluated through gift exchanges in the light of Ottoman Archive documents.
