The contemporary world is witnessing an increasing interest in history and issues of memory, and this has been reflected in the novel by a trend in writing that questions history and delves into the corridors of memory. The Algerian novel has been involved in this trend, similar to the novel “The Spartan Diwan” by Abdel Wahab Issawi, which stopped at France’s invasion of Algeria and the expulsion of the Ottomans from it. This study aims to shed light on the combinations of history and memory at the theoretical and applied levels. In the first part, we touched on the narrative nature of history and the historical novel, and we came to adopt the term “historical imagination” to express the fragility of the boundaries between history and the novel. On the other hand, the redefinition of history led to an escalation of interest in memory in historical and literary studies, as the novel became an important medium of memory. In the second part, we analyzed the recall of memory and historical reference at the level of threshold discourse, and the polyphonic narrative structure that allows for multiple memories, and we allocated methods of ethnographic intertextuality (diaries, letters), historical intertextuality, and marginal memory.
