Notes This article is an attempt to place Coptic history within the broader context of Ottoman history, and to show the close connection between Coptic history and the history of Egypt. The article relied on two documents issued by the Sharia Court in Cairo, and explained these two texts within the framework of a phase of important transformations witnessed by the Coptic community, a reflection of the major transformations that occurred in Egypt at the end of the sixteenth century, and were completed in the middle of the seventeenth century. On the other hand, this article shows how to combine Coptic sources with other sources to provide a clearer reading of the seventeenth century, and the necessity of using different types of sources to complete this picture. The article showed that the two Sharia court documents can be understood more accurately through Coptic sources.
