The Egyptian issue affected France's relations with European countries and the Ottoman Empire, and almost led to a general war between these countries. Therefore, this study, by relying on unpublished British Foreign Office documents, addressed an introduction to the beginning of the Egyptian issue from 1831 AD until the beginning of the second phase of the conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1838 AD. It also touched on a study of France’s position on Muhammad Ali Pasha’s attempts to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire, the solutions proposed to settle this issue, its position on the signing of the Balta-Léman trade agreement on August 16, 1838 AD, the Battle of Nusaybin on June 24, 1839 AD, the announcement of reforms to the Sharif Jalkhana line on November 3, 1839 AD, and the French military escalation, and a discussion of its causes, until the war ended. He concluded by signing the London Agreement on July 15, 1840 AD, and discussing the reasons for France’s rejection of the decisions of this agreement and later accepting them, in addition to addressing the European war efforts that led to the end of the Egyptian issue. This study will rely on the descriptive historical approach, which is considered the most appropriate for this type of study.
