This thesis presents a historical study: the appearance of paper in the Middle East. The identification of the paper manufacturing centers in this region, the different methodologies observed, drawn from ancient Arab sources. An analytical study: analyzes of the subjects present in the firmans of Aleppo which contain several subjects dealing with the political, economic, religious, military and social life of this city. These subjects give us a clearer and more real idea of what happened in this region and more broadly in the Ottoman Empire. A technical study of watermarked papers from the Ottoman collections kept in the center of the Damascus archives: almost constantly, Western papermakers took pains to sign their production using a mark inscribed as a watermark in the sheet when it was manufactured. This brand, which is expressed by the design of a figure or letters, constitutes in a way the stationer's sign. Preventive conservation solutions through climate monitoring and raising awareness among different stakeholders: researchers, managers and readers on good consultation practices. Curative conservation solutions are offered by the use of internationally recognized restoration methods and by the creation of a type of conservation binding that is economically and technically transposable to Syria, a country where this craft is absent.
