The first contact between the Ottoman Empire and the United States of America took place indirectly through the Ottoman provinces in North Africa, namely Algeria, Western Tripoli, and Tunisia. Simple information had preceded that contact, as the Ottomans knew little about the political and economic systems of the Americans, and the relationship between the two parties during the era of the American colonies was limited to the migration of some Western Anatolian families to American lands, and the Americans did not have commercial relations with the Ottoman Empire; Except for the leakage of goods between them since 1785 through the mediation of the British Levant Company. As for the information about the Ottomans, it was transmitted to the Americans through some European immigrants or some British writings. For your information, this information about the Ottomans was subject to the European vision affected by the religious, linguistic, cultural, and historical conflict between the European countries and the Ottoman Empire. Hence, it became common among the Americans that the Ottomans were (the enemies of the Christians). The Europeans spread many rumors about the Ottomans that distorted their image in front of the Americans, but these rumors were unable to influence the American approach, and therefore the efforts of the ambitious Americans in the commercial field were what opened the door to establishing a commercial relationship between the two parties. If we want to mention the United States’ position on the reform movement in the Ottoman Empire, we find that it received great support from Porter, the American minister in Istanbul.
