The city of Azov is one of the most important states in which the Ottoman Empire was keen to support its military fortifications and establish the foundations of security and stability there. The seventeenth century AD witnessed the emergence of some political forces in the region north of the Black Sea, the most important of which were the Cossacks, especially the Don Cossacks, who directed their successive attacks on the Ottoman states, threatening their security and safety. Azov was at the forefront of these states due to its clear strategic importance. That is why the Don Cossacks tried to wrest it from the hands of the Ottomans and succeeded in their demand in 1637 AD. Due to the unstable conditions that the Ottoman Empire suffered from at the internal and external levels; Local revolts against Ottoman rule increased, in addition to the growing Safavid threat. After the end of the war against the Safavids in 1639 AD, the Ottomans reorganized their forces, and succeeded - after harsh attempts - in recovering Azov in 1642 AD. The Russian-Polish war in 1654 AD resulted in the Russians retaking the city of Smolensk in the same year, which secured Russia's southern borders and prompted it to adopt an active policy towards the Black Sea in general, and Azov in particular. In order to subject it to Russian sovereignty, Peter I (1689-1725) prepared his first campaign in 1695 AD to overthrow Azov, but he failed in his goal, so he followed it with a second campaign in the following year that resulted in the overthrow of the city, and achieved For the first time, the Russians achieved a real victory against the Ottoman Empire, as a result of which the nature of relations between the two sides changed.
