His paternal grandfather was Tsar Maximilian I, Caesar of the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation), and his maternal grandfather was the Spanish King Ferdinand the Catholic. Tsar Charles (Charles) V assigned his brother Ferdinand I to manage the affairs of the Holy Roman Empire of the “German Nation” on his behalf, due to Charles V’s constant preoccupation with the affairs of his Spanish kingdom and the French threat surrounding it.
