Summary of the research: During the period of Ottoman control (1516-1918), Mosul was a fertile breeding ground for a number of waves of high prices, drought, famines, and the economic crisis that it was exposed to over different periods of time, which wiped out large numbers of its population. Although Mosul has the most fertile agricultural lands, the water of the Tigris River is the main resource for meeting the water needs of these lands. What may result from the entrapment, flood, and stagnation of this river is the destruction of large agricultural areas, and thus the scarcity of agricultural products for which Mosul is famous, and what accompanied that from the city being invaded by waves of high prices, including the high price of the year 1878, which was known to the people of Mosul as the year of the lira, or Al-Barsimiya (Al-Barsimah) and its meaning. In Kurdish (the hungry), which was considered one of the harshest waves of high prices that the city was exposed to throughout its long history, when food prices rose to the point where the price of a weight of wheat reached (a golden lira), which ultimately led to the city and a number of Iraqi cities being exposed to a harsh wave of high prices. Large numbers of people are victims.
