Notes In terms of the spatial distribution of architectural masses, the process of evolution of Moroccan mosques gave rise to two architectural trends: The first trend: the prayer room with naves parallel to the qibla wall. This trend was strongly present in the first monumental mosques in Morocco. Examples include the Al Quaraouiyine and Al-Andalous mosques in Fez. This composition of volumes was later used in the construction of several medieval and post-medieval mosques in Morocco. The second current: the prayer room with longitudinal naves; the prayer room is also called a hypostyle with a nave perpendicular to the qibla wall. It is inspired by the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. This current is dominant in Almohad mosques and rarely used in Marinid and Saadian mosques. The adoption of the first or second current has repercussions on the interior layout of the mosque. In the first case, the arcades are parallel to the qibla wall and in the second case the arcades are perpendicular to the qibla wall.
