Notes
The period of Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani’s rule of Qatar during the nineteenth century was considered one of the most difficult periods in the modern history of Qatar, due to the economic and social conditions that the country was going through, as well as border disputes, and in light of the competition between Britain and the Ottoman Empire in the region. The Arabian Gulf. In light of this difficult situation, the establishment of the state was not easy or easy. Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani had to do the following: unify the tribes under his rule under a modern system based on central rule in which justice and equality prevail among all citizens, and establish a military force for defense. About the homeland and the citizen, and the alliance with the Ottoman Empire to preserve the entity and independence of the homeland and not allow any state to interfere in the country’s internal affairs. The political leadership, represented by the ruler of the country, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, adopted a wise policy in its relations with neighboring countries, as well as with the rest of the brotherly and friendly countries, based on mutual respect and non-interference in the affairs of others. This is why we can say: Qatar, whether during the era of Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani or the Al Thani rulers who came after him, did not attack any of the neighboring countries, and that the wars that took place between Qatar and some of its neighbors were in defense of the country and its independence. Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani continued to rule the country until his death in December 1878 AD. He will be succeeded by his son and crown prince, Sheikh Qassim bin Mohammed Al Thani.
