Notes
Al-Shihab Al-Khafaji was able to move forward with the art of Maqamat, and he went a long way indicating that this art was still characterized by vitality and quality in the Ottoman era. It was an extension of the Maqamats of Badi’ al-Zaman, Al-Hariri, Al-Suyuti and others, and it came with a great deal of eloquence and ingenuity that expressed social life. Al-Shihab was a rebel against the corruptions of society, criticizing pretenders of knowledge and mocking the state’s mufti and its Sufis. al-Shehab al-Khafagi was able to develop the art of al-Maqama and he worked hard to prove that this art was valid and lively during the ottoman era. Consequently, it was an extension to other Maqamas by Ba’dei al-Zaman, al-Hariri, al-Sutii, and others. The art of al-Maqama was full of rhetoric and ingenuity that depicts the social life. al-Khafagi was rebellious against societal corruption, criticizing knowledge pretenders, and sarcastic of the Mufti’s state and its Sufis.
