Notes
The research aims to explain the importance of the endowment document, and to identify methods of documentation during a stage in which the documentation process witnessed unparalleled skill in the legal and organizational aspects of archiving endowments through a study that relied on opening part of the archives of the Ottoman Empire, focusing on a specific case related to the city of Mosul in Iraq, specifically the Al-Nuri Mosque. The study reviews some of the documents that were obtained for the first time, and analyzes them. The research relied on the historical, descriptive and then analytical approach in a way that is appropriate to the research paragraphs. The research reached a number of results and recommendations, including: the importance of documenting endowments and their details, the abundance and diversity of endowments in the city of Mosul and their influence, the inherent connection of social and charitable endowments to Mosul society, the importance of Al-Nouri Mosque and its endowments, and the disappearance of part of them. The study recommends making a joint effort to study the bonds of the mosque’s endowments to restore what has disappeared.
