Notes The Battle of Kutu'l-Amara took place 160 km from Baghdad in 1915. It happened in the town on the edge of the Tigris River in the east. Kutu'l-Amare town, where transportation was made via the Tigris River to the Persian Gulf and from there to India and other Far Eastern countries by sea, was the most economical and shortest way, was considered as an intermediate station at that time. The region where Kutu'l-Amara is located has rich oil resources. It is because of this wealth that the British Empire fought with the Ottoman Empire. The commander of the British soldiers in Kutu'l-Amara was General Townshend. British troops were defeated on April 29, 1915 and surrendered with their weapons to Colonel Halil Bey, Commander of the Iraqi Front of the Ottoman Empire. Since both Halil Pasha Kut and General Townshend were fluent in French, the surrender was made after speaking to each other without the need for a translator.
