Notes
The birth records recorded on the spines and covers of manuscripts are one of the most important textual anomalies in codicology. This is due to the dates of birth that are proven and documented, which served as birth certificates in the Ottoman era. Through them, what is stated in biographies regarding the dates of births of scholars can be corrected. Despite this, the study of birth records was not given the importance it deserves. Rather, it was overlooked by scholars who focused when studying the material aspects of the manuscript, especially when studying the outliers of the text, by studying what was mentioned on the spines and covers of manuscripts, such as: endowments, abrogation, ijaza, hearing, reading, and others. They covered the study of birth restrictions. Anyone who browses the Arabic library will find only a small amount of information on this topic, and if it exists, it is only a hint without elaboration or depth. The study deals with a group of birth records contained on the backs and covers of manuscripts in the Ottoman era from various libraries in Türkiye, Qatar, and the Vatican. It follows the descriptive and analytical approach by examining these twenty entries, whose language ranges between Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and presenting them according to their dates from oldest to newest. Without considering the date of its copying, what is important is to take into account the date of the birth text itself. As for the analytical study, which was dealt with in terms of form, then the analytical study of its contents, knowledge of its types, and an attempt to reach that it is a method for proving and registering births followed in the Ottoman era. The percentage of some of the elements included in the restrictions was calculated and represented graphically.
