Notes	During the sixteenth century, the Mediterranean was described as a “battlefield.” This battle was between two international powers: the Kingdom of Spain in the west, and the Ottoman Empire in the east. The sixth century witnessed evidence of the strength and expansion of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the rise of the power of Spain after its unification at the hands of Ferdinand and Isabella. The Mediterranean was a meeting point for the expansions of those international powers.
