The research deals with the stages of Türkiye's accession to the European Union since 1959, when the Turkish government applied to join the European Community, until the present. Modernizing and reforming the Turkish political system, its institutions, and its working mechanisms has been brewing in the minds of Turkish decision-makers since an early time, and they are aware of the need for modernization and development. The first and historically important step was the reforms undertaken by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish state in 1923, which represented the elimination of most of the manifestations of backwardness that prevailed during the period of the Ottoman Empire, which were represented by political, economic and military reforms, great openness, and a broad interest in the Western and European system in particular, but these efforts always collided with European apathy and dissatisfaction, sometimes citing justifications related to reasons related to Turkish political instability and other reasons. It has economic dimensions, which are ultimately intended to rehabilitate the Turkish political system according to purely European standards and conditions, which finally ended with the Copenhagen criteria, which were interpreted according to the official Turkish opinion that the Union is not serious in making its decision regarding Türkiye’s accession to it. The research also addressed the most important obstacles standing in the way of Turkey’s accession to the European Union, which are political instability and the political system’s confiscation of the principles of democracy, human rights, and cultural and religious heritage, as well as population inflation in Turkey and the issue of Greece’s refusal to vote with Turkey’s accession to the Union against the backdrop of the Turkish-Greek conflict in Cyprus and other determinants. The research also addressed the position of the most important European political forces and parties, especially in Germany and France, on the issue of Türkiye’s accession to the European Union, especially after the rise of the Christian-Democratic right throughout Europe.
