Notes During the Ottoman era, the northern African provinces witnessed the emergence of many families that influenced the history of those provinces politically, economically and socially. In the western province of Tripoli, a group of families appeared that had a role in the political, economic and cultural history of the province, especially the Awlad Muhammad family, which ruled the Fezzan region south of the western province of Tripoli for a long period of nearly two and a half centuries, during which it was able to impose its control over most of the southern cities of the western province of Tripoli, which prompted the ruling authorities in Tripoli both in The first Ottoman era (1550-1711), or during the Karamanli era (1711-1735) to recognize that family’s control over Fezzan despite the many campaigns it sent to eliminate the family’s rule, but they failed to do so. According to these data came the importance of this study, which aimed to identify the nature of the political and economic relations between the ruling authorities in Tripoli and the rulers of the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan, as well as studying the economic activities practiced by the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan, as This family was active in the desert caravan trade because of its large financial returns that contributed to the increase in the wealth of that family and its survival throughout that period. The nature of this study necessitated dividing it into an introduction, followed by three sections, then the conclusion. In the introduction, we dealt with the political conditions that Fezzan witnessed before the arrival of the Awlad Muhammad family there. As for the first section, we touched on the origin of that family and how it controlled the affairs of government in Fezzan in the year 1550, while in the second section we talked about the Awlad Muhammad’s political relationship with the ruling authorities in Tripoli during the period 1551-1813, when the Ottoman authorities launched There were many campaigns against Fezzan in order to eliminate the rule of the Awlad Muhammad family, but they failed to do so until the fall of the family’s rule in 1813. As for the third section, we touched on the commercial activity of the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan during the period 1551-1813, as the rulers of the family carried out various commercial activities in Fezzan in order to make more money, especially the slave trade, which was a popular trade during that period. The study relied on various sources, most notably Arabic and Arabized books and academic studies, the most prominent of which was (A Brief History of Fezzan) by Muhammad Suleiman Ayoub, as well as the book (The Libyan Interiors) by the French traveler Adolphe Krause, as well as the book (The Journey from Tripoli to Fezzan) by the British traveler John Francis Lyon. As for academic studies, the study relied on a master’s thesis entitled (Slavery in the Western Province of Tripoli during the Nineteenth Century, a study of the factors of its development and prosperity and the circumstances of its delivery. And its effects) by the Libyan researcher Khalifa Ibrahim Daou, which shed light on the role of the Awlad Muhammad family in the slave trade in its first chapter, as well as (a study entitled The Political, Economic and Social History of the City of Murzuq 1150-1911) by the Libyan researcher Ajila Abdullah Saad Amara Al-Rubaie, as well as some branching sources mentioned in the list of sources and references. This research sheds light on a family that influenced the history of the western Tripoli Eyale in general and the Fezzan region in particular, the family of Muhammad al-Fassi's sons, which extended its control over the province of Fezzan for a period of nearly two hundred and fifty years (1550-1813). This family had an active and prominent role in The political and economic events in the Fezzan region throughout that period, they engaged in a bitter struggle with the Ottomans (1551-1711) and the Karamanids (1711-1813) for control of Fezzan, and the repeated attempts of the ruling authorities in Tripoli failed to eliminate the rule of Muhammad' sons, Because of the strength of their influence in Fezzan, until the coming of Yusuf Pasha al-Qarmanli to power in Tripoli (1795-1833), who took advantage of the weakness that this family had become, and was able to end their rule
