Notes In the Holy Quran, in Nur 24/31 and Ahzab 33/59, women are ordered to cover themselves when going out or meeting a strange man. How this covering should be and who the foreign men are are discussed in detail in the tafsir of the judgments and books of fiqh. The subject has been examined under two headings in the fiqh works of the Hanafi sect. The first of the headings is about the conditions of prayer. The second title is the section generally called "Kitâbü'l-İstihsan", and in some works "Kitâbü'l-Kerâhiyye" and "Kitâbü'l- Hazr ve'l-İbâha". In the section on the conditions of prayer, the part of the woman's private parts during prayer is explained. Under the second heading, the limbs that a free woman does not have to cover when she is not in the namahram state are mentioned. While this issue was discussed in a very simple style in fiqh books for a long time, recent scholars of the sect have detailed the issue and preferred a more restrictive interpretation regarding hijab. Zahid al-Kevserî, one of the last sheikh al-Islam deputies of the Ottoman Empire and known for his devotion to the Hanafi sect, also followed the views advocated by recent scholars when discussing the issue in his article that we translated, and addressed the issue with a rather narrow interpretation. It is seen that Kevserî used narrations that support his own claim while benefiting from the views of classical period jurists. In order to understand Kevserî's thoughts on veiling, in this article we will examine the change in the understanding of veiling within the Hanafi sect over periods. Then, we will present the translation of Zahid el-Kevserî's article titled "The Covering of Women" written on this subject, and finally, we will make an evaluation of the sect's and Kevserî's understanding of veiling through this article.
