Notes
This paper aims to publish and present texts specifically about the seat of the Patriarchs in Harat Al-Rum. These texts contribute to reconsidering the turbulent and sometimes contradictory narratives about the history of the headquarters of the Coptic patriarchs in Cairo. It also sheds light on the architectural details of one of the important buildings in Ottoman-era Cairo, which is the residence of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch in Haret al-Rum in Cairo, and how the building was equipped and prepared for the Patriarch’s residence. These details may be useful to those interested in architecture in the Ottoman era, and in particular the architectural details of the residence of the head of a religious sect, and then specialists in this matter can extract whatever connotations they wish, or answer questions, perhaps one of which is identifying certain characteristics of what can be called Coptic architecture in the Ottoman era. Likewise, the absence of these characteristics answers more important questions raised by historical and social studies of eighteenth-century Cairo, which assumed the existence of a new cultural pattern in which religion does not constitute strict boundaries.
