When the Great Arab Revolt was announced, led by Sharif Hussein, in 1916 AD, against the Ottoman Empire, France was afraid of recognizing the declaration of the revolution against the federalists and standing by Sharif Hussein, because it feared that the outbreak of the revolution might prevent it from achieving its control over the Levant, which it had been seeking for a long time. However, Britain had an important influence in encouraging France to recognize the Arab Revolt. France received an official request from Britain through its ambassador in Paris, Lord Bertie, urging it to provide assistance to the revolution. Britain assured France that it must strengthen its relationship with Sharif Hussein because if the Allies delayed implementing his request regarding providing assistance, he might be forced to make peace with the Ottoman Empire. In the face of this request submitted by Britain to France, the latter saw that Sharif Hussein’s revolution must be recognized, even in an apparent way, due to its fear that Britain would be the only one to have broad influence in the Arab Levant when providing its assistance to the revolution.
