This study deals with the population of the city of Jerusalem in the tenth century AH / sixteenth century AD, indicating their categories, the growth of the city’s population in the first half of this century and its decline at its end, and explaining the factors that led to this. The study also addresses the impact of the neighboring Bedouin tribes (Arabs) on the demographic structure, both negatively and positively, especially on the security and administrative situation in the city of Jerusalem and its environs. This study relied mainly on statistical surveys conducted by the Ottoman Empire for the Jerusalem District in the sixteenth century AD, and on the records of the Sharia Court of Jerusalem, as well as on the royal rulings contained in the books of the contemporary mission of these surveys.
