This paper discusses the importance of Ibn Khaldun in the social sciences through a number of methodological and theoretical dimensions, and its discussion revolves around what I consider to be the levels of research on Ibn Khaldun. The latter ranges from a meta-theoretical level to an empirical and applied level. I argue that we need more meta-theoretical and theoretical research on Ibn Khaldun’s writings if we want his work to be taken seriously in the most important disciplines of the social sciences, and I argue that it be taken into consideration as a model for a modern social science rooted in the Islamic tradition. This paper discusses the levels of research on Ibn Khaldun as an aborted legacy in modern social sciences, starting from the most important levels to the least important. The paper also raises a number of methodological and theoretical issues related to Ibn Khaldun’s scientific achievement.
