During the Ottoman era, the northern African provinces witnessed the emergence of many families that influenced the history of those provinces politically, economically and socially. In the western province of Tripoli, a group of families appeared that had a role in the political, economic and cultural history of the province, especially the Awlad Muhammad family, which ruled the Fezzan region south of the western province of Tripoli for a long period of nearly two and a half centuries during which it was able to impose its control over most of the southern cities of the western province of Tripoli, which prompted the ruling authorities in Tripoli to either During the first Ottoman era (1550-1711), or during the Qaramanli era (1711-1735), the control of that family over Fezzan was recognized despite the many campaigns it sent to eliminate the family’s rule, but they failed to do so. According to these data, the importance of this study came, which aimed to identify the nature of the political and economic relations between the ruling authorities in Tripoli and the rulers of the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan, as well as studying the economic activities practiced by the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan. This family was active in the desert caravan trade because of its large financial returns that contributed to the increase in the wealth of that family and its survival throughout that period. The nature of this study required dividing it into an introduction, followed by three sections, then the conclusion. In the introduction, we discussed the political conditions that Fezzan witnessed before the arrival of the Awlad Muhammad family there. As for the first section, we touched on the origin of that family and how it controlled the affairs of government in Fezzan in the year 1550, while in the second section we talked about the Awlad Muhammad’s political relationship with the ruling authorities in Tripoli during the period 1551-1813, as the Ottoman authorities launched numerous campaigns. On Fezzan in order to eliminate the rule of the Awlad Muhammad family, but it failed to do so until the fall of the family’s rule in 1813. As for the third section, we touched on the commercial activity of the Awlad Muhammad family in Fezzan during the period 1551-1813, as the rulers of the family carried out various commercial activities in Fezzan in order to make more money, especially the slave trade, which was a popular trade during that period. The study relied on various sources, most notably Arabic and Arabized books and academic studies, the most prominent of which was (A Brief History of Fezzan) by Muhammad Suleiman Ayoub, in addition to the book (The Libyan Interiors) by the French traveler Adolf Krause, as well as the book (The Journey from Tripoli to Fezzan) by the British traveler John Francis Lyon. As for academic studies, the study relied on a master’s thesis entitled (Slavery in the Western Province of Tripoli during the Nineteenth Century, a study of the factors of its development and prosperity and the circumstances of its delivery. And its effects) by the Libyan researcher Khalifa Ibrahim Dao, which shed light on the role of the Awlad Muhammad family in the slave trade in its first chapter, as well as (a study entitled The Political, Economic and Social History of the City of Murzuq 1150-1911) by the Libyan researcher Ajila Abdullah Saad Amara Al-Rubaie, as well as some branching sources mentioned in the list of sources and references.
