Notes	During the Ottoman period, Algeria witnessed conflicts with European powers due to its maritime activity in the Mediterranean. This led to the capture of large numbers of Europeans at the hands of Algerian sea captains, and among the English captives was Joseph Pitts, who was arrested in 1678 during his return from Newfoundland. During his captivity in Algiers, Bates recorded many notes about the details of life there. After his return to England, he published a book entitled “A True and Honest Account of the Customs and Religion of Muslims,” published in London in 1704. This source sheds light on multiple aspects of political, economic, and social life in Algeria at that time. What caught my attention was his careful recording of some of the social customs of the people of the city, which prompted me to present and analyze these aspects to the reader in this article. These aspects include the religious rituals of prayer, fasting, and ablution, as well as the prevailing social traditions in mourning ceremonies and greeting people, eating habits, marriage, and other aspects of life at that time.
