Notes Ali Haydar Efendi was one of the late Ottoman scholars and one of the leading jurists of his period. He held judicial positions and taught Mecelle-i Ahkâm-ı Adliyye and Land law courses in higher education institutions for many years. His work called Dürerü'l-Hukkam is one of the important commentaries of Mecelle, which we can describe as the Ottoman civil law. He took part in the legalization movement as a fatwa trustee and served in commissions and prepared various draft laws, especially Kitâbu'n-Nafakât. Ali Haydar Efendi argued that the source that should be taken as basis in Ottoman codification studies was Islamic law and criticized the quotation of Western law. According to him, the basis of the problems in the Ottoman Empire is the separation from Sharia law; Laws based on Sharia sources are always more in line with justice than established laws.
