Notes
Treatise on the observation of solar eclipses through a camera obscura by Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Haytham (Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham; d. ca 1040).
The text contains four diagrams, which are collected on a fold out (f. 34r) following the text.
Begins (f. 8v, lines 2-4):
There may be an image of sunlight at the time of the eclipse if its light emerges from a narrow hole
It is round and ends on a surface opposite the hole, similar to the shape of a crescent if it does not separate
Eclipse all...
Ends (f. 33r, lines 6-9):
...The moonlight does not appear if it emerges from the holes as a crescent moon at the time of the universe
The moon is a crescent at the time of its eclipse, so the light that emerges from the hole always appears round and clear
However, when does the sunlight appear as a crescent, and when does it appear as a round shape?
Its eclipse, and these are the meanings that we intended to clarify in this article...
Colophon
Section at the end of a manuscript text.
(f. 33r, lines 9-10):
