Notes A treatise on the management of armies and preparation for warfare, by Muḥammad Ibn Manjlī (or Mankalī or Manglī) al-Nāṣirī (Muḥammad Ibn Manjlī, fl. 1362-76, see ff. 45r, line 6 and 58r, line 1). The author was a high-ranking officer in the guard of Sultan al-Malik al-Ashraf Shaʿbān (reg. 764–78/1362–76), and wrote several other works, some now lost, on military matters (see f. 37r). The treatise, defective at beginning and end and undated, includes sections on archery, lance techniques, horsemanship, and the apotropaic value of letters and numbers when inscribed on arms and armor (ff. 38r-41v). Begins (f. 1r, lines 1-4): ...And its origin is approval of the worshiped God, and this is in the right of God God Almighty, as for human beings, it is in agreement with the command in Himself said: Qaz and its condition is extending the breath when it emerges Command orders, even if speech is difficult... Ends (f. 78v, lines 4-7): ...and there is a difference Their weapons are detailed: a man with a spear and a knight He has a spear, so the man's way is to thrust his spear into the gap When he did that, the knight would be denied entry
