Notes
A commentary by Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Sanbāṭī (Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Sunbati, fl. 16th century) on the
Treatise on the Use of the Sine Quadrant
(The treatise on working with the answerable quarter) in twenty chapters (Chapter) by Badr al-Dīn Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Shāfi‘ī al-Miṣrī al-Dimashqī (Badr al-Din Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Shafi’i al-Masri al-Dimashqi, b. 1423, d. 1490), known as Sibṭ al-Māridīnī (Tribe of the Mardini), timekeeper (timekeeper) of the al-Azhar Mosque at Cairo.
Another copy of this text is found on ff. 4v-17r of the present volume. F.135 is a replacement. The text is preceded by a page of notes (f. 123r).
Beginnings (f. 123v, lines 2-6):
Then the poor servant says to God Almighty, Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Sunbati al-Shafi’i
This is a nice clarification of the message placed in the work with the answered quarter composed
Sheikh Badr Al-Din Al-Mardini, may God Almighty have mercy on him, I put it on her when you read this
Our sheikh, the scholar and mufti, Mr. Sharif Muhammad bin Abi Al-Khair Al-Armouni Al-Maliki, may God bless him and grant him peace
May God save him...
Ends (f. 138v, lines 15-18):
...So if it is said correctly when that planet is in the middle and passes through its degrees
He decided that, because it is the rising of dawn, and God Almighty knows, there is no Lord other than Him and there is no deity other than Him
There is no power nor strength except in God, the Most High, the Great, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon our Master Muhammad and his family and companions, and may God grant him peace and praise.
To God, Lord of the worlds
