Notes Versified abbreviation of a text on timekeeping using an astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. quadrant (quarter with arches) centered on the Mosque of al-Hākim (presumably in Cairo). The introduction to the text mentions that it consists of ten bābs (Chapters) and a conclusion (Conclusion), a division found in the present copy although the expected rubricated section headings were not added. The author (possibly to be read al-Mazālī, Al-Mazali: the name of a Tunisian Berber tribe), is unknown. Beginnings (f. 47v, lines 9-12): He said, “Fakir, pardoner of his Lord, Omar, Hamad, who is blessed with looms, has lived.” Praying and then greeting Muhammad and his family, most exalted After this overview of working with the quarter, the arches are complete From shortening the word at the end and revealing the meaning at the end Ends (f. 50r, lines 10-12): The truth of that statement is nothing but permission and acceptance It ended as it was found, with the praise of God and His good help, and prayers and peace be upon our Master and Lord Muhammad, His Prophet and servant, and upon his family. And his companions and peace be upon him, and our last supplication is that praise be to God, Lord of the worlds
