Notes Major treatise on historical astrology by Abū Ma‘shar Ja‘far ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Umar al-Balkhi (Abu Ma`shar Ja`far ibn Muhammad Umar al-Balkhi; d. ca 886). The text is divided into eight parts (articles) in sixty-three chapters (chapters), not ninety-three chapters as erroneously stated in this manuscript (f. 1v, line 4, transcribed below). There are diagrams of three horoscopes (ff. 113v and 114r). Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-5): This is a book about the meanings of the upper bodies on the lower events Existing in the world of the universe and corruption, in terms of its corruption, its goodness when the principles arise The Qur’an or other books, which are eight articles and ninety-three chapters, written by Abu Ma’shar Jaafar bin Muhammad, who is called the Book of Religions and States... Ends (f. 117, lines 20-22): ... Now that we have achieved what we wanted to describe, let us complete the second chapter of the article The eighth, with us completing the entirety of the book, with God’s help and support, and praise be to God alone, and may God’s prayers and peace be upon him Our Master Muhammad and his family and companions, peace and blessings be upon him
