Notes Extracts from Kitāb fī Maʿrifat al-ḥajar (Book on Knowledge of Stone) attributed to Ibn Waḥshīyah (Ibn Wahshiyya). The passages extracted relate the opinions on alchemical matters of three groups: those who resrict themselves to mineral ingredients in their work (mineral owners), those who employ vegetable ingredients (plant owners), and those who employ animal ingredients (animal owners). The text is divided into two sections: Section One (ff. 91v-95r); Section Two: The Operation ('Section Two: The Operation'; ff. 91v-96v). Beginnings (f. 91v, lines 4-8): The wise man Abu Bakr bin Wahshiyah, may God have mercy on him, said in his book on the knowledge of stone Know that my book is a guide for the one who looks at it, and if he stands with knowledge from it and learns anything from it, then it is not He takes it for himself and stands by it in his heart, but rather accepts it with proof and its authenticity so that there is no doubt about it The last discussion in the rest of the book is in two aspects: one aspect is about knowing the stone on the truth and the other aspect is about knowledge The right measures, such as quarantine, and we ask God Almighty for success... Ends (f. 96v, lines 13-16): ...Then it is returned to the lot and distilled, and you continue to do so with it This is so that in the lot it remains all tied together, without any of it dripping, neither a little nor a lot The fire continues on it until the vapor that rises to the alembic stops, and then it stops His sweat appears on his face, and he is a little light-headed.
