Notes A short treatise in bāb s on the astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. quadrant, written by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muhammad al-Wafāʿī (Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad al-Wafa'i, active 15th century) in 843/1439 and based on the works of the muwaqqit s (official timekeepers) Jamal al-Din ʿAbd Allāh al-Māridīnī (Jamal al-Din Abdullah al-Mardini, d. 1406) and Shams [also: Zayn] al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Mizzī (Shams [Zayn] al-Din Muhammad Al-Mazi, d. 1349), who was also an instrument-maker (see the astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. quadrant made by him in the British Museum: object number 1888, 1201.276 <https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/W_1888-1201-276>). While the present copy lacks a colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , all other texts in the same volume were transcribed in 1070/1659-60 by the scribe ʿAlī ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Zayn al-Dīn al-ʿĀmilī (Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Zayn al-Din al-ʿĀmilī). F. 165v bears a marginal note referring to the text's transmission by the scribe's ancestor Zayn al-Dīn. Begins (f. 147v, lines 2-4): Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and submission be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the last of the prophets and messengers, and upon his family And read the collection and after the explanation of the useful concise message, God willing, gather in it among the messages Interviews with Sheikh Imam Shams al-Din Mohammed al-Mazi and Jamal al-Din Abdullah al-Mardini. Ends (f. 165r, line 16- f. 165v, line 2): ...between rows The arc and the rest are the best circles in the east that the rest is smaller than half the arc In the western direction it can be more and if the noise is easier to exit in the virtue of the district and then hidden from you Allah knows best
