Anonymous handbook of surgical practice.
The title appears on the cover of the volume (f. 1r) as the
Book of Surgical Operations
(Book of Surgical Operations), but is given in table of contents (ff. 1v-4r, on f. 1v, line 1) as
Blazes of Success Concerning the Surgeon’s Operations
(Book of the Deceptions of Success in the Works of a Surgeon). The latter title belongs to a work by Muḥammad bin ʻAlī al-Baqlī (Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqli, d. 1876), but a comparison between that work (Baqlī,
Kitāb Ghurar al-najāḥ
, 1263/1846) and the present manuscript proves that they are in fact not identical.
Many leaves have been left blank. F. 89 is formed of four leaves pasted together. The manuscript is bound and held within a chemistry. Both the front and back boards have been foliated as though the chemise itself were the cover.
Begins (f. 4v, lines 2-5):
In operations performed on the bone group
These operations are either original to remove a diseased bone fragment
Or it is done in order to create a way for another action, such as opening the maxillary sinus for
Healing what was in it, and this process is the root of another process, such as amputation
Ends (f. 204r, lines 25-28):
It is left for coalescence later, and only patients in this condition are given it
Unless (!) feed the truth for a long period of time, if symptoms of assembly are generated
With this caution, the anus (?) is slit to join again, leaving the anus (?)
Latifah is said to be incurable
