Notes
Defective copy of a medical compendium tabulated in synoptic charts, by Zayn al-Dīn Abū Ibrāhīm Ismā‘īl ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥusaynī al-Jurjānī (Zain al-Dīn Abu Ibrahim Ismail bin Muhammad al-Husayni al-Jurjani, d. 1136). He is also known as Ismā‘īl ibn al-Ḥasan (Ismail bin Al-Hasan) or Ismā‘īl ibn al-Ḥusayn (Ismail bin Al-Hussein).
The complete work consists of two parts (two sections): part one on theoretical medicine, in three books (book), and part two on treatment of diseases. The text is presented in tables, variously including headings such as causes, nature, indications, symptoms and diagnostic tests, types, regimen, and treatment.
The present volume is missing the first book of part one, and opens with the entry on the stomach (stomach) from the second subsection (section) of the second book (on anatomy) of part one.
Part two lacks the end of the text following the eleventh section (Chapter) of the ninth chapter on diseases of the oesophagus and stomach (The Ninth Article on Diseases of the Esophagus and Stomach, ff. 91r-95v). The final leaf (f. 96) is the volume’s only remaining folio following the incomplete ninth chapter (article) of the second section (section). It bears text from the ninth section on ulcers of the kidneys and urinary system. There are blank, unfoliated leaves between ff. 86 and 87 and between ff. 94 and 95.
